"San Francisco Reverie"

In my work, I use acrylic paint to recreate highly realistic and intricately detailed depictions of San Francisco architecture. Painting in a realistic style lets my detail-oriented mind thrive and focus on light, texture, and form.

The first time I visited San Francisco, I was drawn to the colorful buildings and culture. It was so different from anything I had seen and definitely a change from my neighborhood in the Chicago suburbs. Since spending more time in San Francisco over the past few years, I have developed a deeper admiration for the city. What once felt unfamiliar has now become a source of inspiration and artistic exploration. The geometric shapes, bold colors, and decorative motifs became imprinted in my mind. Every time I make my way up to the city, I take photos of buildings that make me stop in my tracks. I try to work from angles that show a different point of view and showcase the geometry and beauty of the architecture.

One of the most meaningful aspects of this series is painting San Francisco’s homes. They are not just visually stunning but hold emotional weight and personal connection. While I could have focused on other buildings, choosing to paint homes brought me closer to the city. They represent San Francisco’s history, identity, and belonging.

While creating this series, I have become increasingly inspired by artists who have skillfully captured the essence of San Francisco, such as Lynette Cook and John Musgrove. Their ability to translate the city's character, history, and atmosphere is something I deeply admire. Cook, especially, with her hyperrealistic paintings of fire escapes and windows, has helped shape my approach. Her work has encouraged me to lean into my own fascination with architectural detail.

For me, the past 5 months and countless hours spent on these paintings have been less of a technical exercise and more of a way to celebrate the city and demonstrate my love for it. My hope is that my work can evoke a sense of connection and memory. Whether someone lives in San Francisco or has just visited briefly, I want my paintings to stir recognition and nostalgia.
